True Story: When Favour did not Receive Favour

“I do not have anything to lose,” Favour thought. “God is probably giving me a second chance. Besides, I am only on a short contract with this organisation.”

Those were Favour’s thoughts when he received the job description from one of the managers of the organisation. In 2012, he had attended an interview with this company but he was not offered the job. When the managers called him the second time to re-apply for the same position, Favour was beside himself with so much excitement. This was going to be his second try and probably his final job application.

Favour knew how well the company paid its employees, not to even mention the trips and allowances which came with working there. He could not keep himself from imagining how his life was going to transform when he finally reports to the office. Before that, the Human Resource manager had also asked him to forward his latest Curriculum Vitae (CV) and cover letter. Favour felt special when an interview date was forwarded to him immediately he submitted his CV and cover letter.

During the interview, he did put up a splendid performance. Favour recalls how the Manager kept nodding at every sentence that came out of his mouth. To him, the questions were simpler compared to the other interviews he had attended. He never doubted the position was going to be his.

After the interview, he could not help but reminisce over the entire experience. He tuned in to his favourite Christian FM station as he sipped on the bottle of fanta he had bought from the shop. This is called ‘celebrating victory ahead of time.’

“I can tell there is victory ahead. Somebody is about to hear the best news ever,” the preacher on the radio said. “Can I hear someone shout a loud Amen.”

This must be the Holy Spirit speaking to me, Favour thought. He did shout his largest Amen as he made a quick trot and ended up somersaulting in his bedroom. He jumped three more times and was completely out of breath when he finally walked to sit on his bed. This preacher is indeed a man of God. He made a mental note to capture his contact details and probably sow a seed into his ministry when he is employed in the company. Indeed it is not flesh and blood that had revealed his enormous victory to the preacher.

The days following the interview were one of the longest ever experienced by this young man. He kept praying, trusting and believing that indeed, his miracle was knocking on his door. He had earlier told his mum about the job and she was also trusting and praying with Favour.

On the fourth day, after constantly checking his smartphone for updates or email from the organization, Favour decided to include a fast to his daily routine. He remembered an aspect of a sermon which was preached on the radio the other day in Daniel 10:13, where Daniel had been praying but the prince of the Persian kingdom kept resisting him for twenty-one days, thus, his prayers going unanswered. This scripture pushed Favour to pray some holy ghost crazy prayers which could last for about three hours. His shirt was always drenched in his own sweat whenever he finished praying those prayers.

That was the routine for Favour for 14 days. He barely touched his meals which were prepared by his mum. All he wanted was a phone call confirming his appointment in that company.

On the 15th Day, the heavens smiled on him when his phone finally beeped notifying him of an email from the company. The logo of the company was unmistakable. His heart flipped out of excitement while he clicked on the email.

“Dear Favour. This email is to inform you that the interview panel has decided to select another candidate for the Business Development Manager Position. We are sorry….”

This is a true story which was shared by one of our readers. Favour is seeking your response to what he should do next. Remember to leave your views and remarks in the comments box.

How to Use Social Media as a Christian

September is our Month of Empowerment. Let’s learn to do things right, starting with the proper way to use some social media tools like Whatsapp.

WHATSAPP

This is the first in the series of posts aimed at empowering Christians, particularly those of us in Ghana. Articles, which will be posted this month, will be targeted towards improving our interactions as Christians and make us better people. Today’s post intends to take us through some protocols of using Whatsapp, a popular social media platform. Make sure you read and share with people who need this counsel.

The Bible in Hosea 4:6 says,

my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. “Because you have rejected knowledge.

We, however, do not have any excuse to unlearn some old and unacceptable behaviours.

Here are some helpful tips on how to use Whatsapp as a Christian:

Don’t form a Group, YET

Whatsapp groups are common and very easy to form. It is very tempting to decide to form one immediately after every church meeting.

But before you decide to form a group, there should be a clear aim for setting up the page. Are you forming the group because of an upcoming event? If that is the reason, do not forget to close the group when the event has ended.

Also, let that group page be governed by some rules (Romans 13:1). It is easy for us Christians to keep bombarding ourselves with all sorts of forwarded messages. This is why as an administrator of the page, you should be as specific as possible on the purpose for the group page by clearly spelling out the rules for your members.

All Messages are not relevant; Don’t forward them

Unless some of us do not read the words, ‘forward this message and receive your miracle.’ That message will end up in all groups that we are a part of, which is sometimes annoying.

On the issue of ‘share this information and receive your miracle,’ like some principles in our faith, is not automatic. Miracles will happen in your life if only you believe. Do not share those messages and think you will automatically receive whatever you have been trusting God for. Christianity is not magic.

Let one discussion end before introducing a new topic

A typical phenomenon on some Christian WhatsApp platforms is when members of that group are discussing something pertinent and another member shares another thing totally unrelated to what is being discussed. For instance, members on a group page are discussing how best to promote an upcoming event and all of sudden, Kwame forwards a funny photo of something totally unrelated to what is being discussed.

Let’s be vigilant, in real life you may not interrupt people by introducing a new subject, why is it easy for us to do so on WhatsApp group pages?

Send personal messages before adding people to groups

One of the most embarrassing things that happened to me on a church WhatsApp group page was when I was added without being notified of what the page was about. I started criticising the very cause for which I was added to the group. The administrator immediately took me off the page, sent a personal message to introduce the group before adding me but, the harm had already been caused.

I just wondered why the administrator did not do this the first time but made me embarrass myself.

Let’s not put members of group pages in such embarrassing situations.

Introduce yourself when sending a message for the first time

When you are sending a message to someone for the first time, please introduce yourself. Why do we assume the person knows you and has your contact saved on their phones? Try to avoid the shameful situation of being asked to introduce yourself when sending a message for the first time.

There are a group of people who do not communicate with you at all. All they do is to forward devotionals and other messages to you. Please strike some acquaintance with your contacts before you forward messages to them!

Be empowered as a Christian! Remain blessed as you practise these etiquettes!

What are some of the situations you have noticed on Whatsapp but have not been captured in this post? Do share with us in the comment box.

Unravelling the Mystery of Ceaseless Prayers

“Prayer must be very hard. I doubt I can ever pray like these people,”

These were thoughts of young Abu, a man who accepted Christ not too long ago, while he observed a group of believers praying in other tongues.

Abu was born into a typical African Traditional home and had heard tales of a particular faction of Christians – the Charismatics, who were aggressive when praying but this was his first time observing them.
He never thought praying could be this vigorous and perspiring, however, Abu made a remarkable observation.

These charismatic Christians prayed for several hours, more rigorously by the time, in a totally different language but they appeared refreshed throughout the process.

This scene kept playing in his mind while he sat in church the following Sunday. Mysteriously, his pastor’s sermon that dwelt  on praying endlessly.

“To pray without ceasing, according to 1 Thessalonians 5:17, means to pray uninterruptedly,” said  Reverend Paul to the joyous congregation who seem to understand what that meant.

“How can that be possible? I don’t think anyone can follow through with this,” Abu thought.

He grew increasingly confused but nurtured a desire to learn more about this ‘endless’ prayer.

This desire pushed him to interview Reverend Paul after close of service.

“Prayer simply means communicating with God but there’s more to it,” says the Reverend. “Prayer helps you to be conscious of your ‘new’ life in God and grants you means of receiving from Him.”

Conscious of my new life? Abu interjected.

Reverend Paul noticed it was a good time to dwell on the subject of the new life since that would allow Abu to grasp the subject of prayer better.

He invites Abu into his office so they could have a detailed discussion on the subject.

Find out how the conversation between the Reverend and Abu transpired in the next part of this post.

5 Empowering Scriptures you Need to Know as a Christian

How many of us agree that the Christian walk is not as easy. Even Paul admits in 2 Corinthians 4:8 that we are tempted on every side but are not crushed. Each day we are faced with different trials which are supposed strengthens us, according to the Bible and the only way we can face each day and battle is by using the appropriate scriptures, that is the only way we can reassure ourselves of God promises for our lives. Today, I am sharing five scriptures which always encourage me whenever I am faced with challenges of the day. As usual, you can also share those that inspire you.

Scripture 1: Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans and thoughts that I think towards you. They are thoughts of good and not evil. They are thoughts to give hope and a future.

Scripture 2: Isaiah 40:31

Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount on wings like eagle. They shall run and not be weary they shall walk and not grow faint.

Scripture 3: Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.                                                                                                                                                                                                       Scripture 4: Mathew 19:26

With man, this is impossible but with God, all things are possible.

Scripture 5: Philippians 4:6

Be anxious for nothing but in everything with prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Marriage Series: Christian Dating and Courting

Dating. What does this word mean to a Christian in Ghana? Well, in most developed countries, dating or going on a date is doing something fun with the opposite sex but in Ghana, dating is the very first step to getting acquainted with a member of the opposite sex. This is the period that a guy and a lady decide if they are right for each other. Dating may lead to courtship and later, marriage 🙂

During the dating period, a guy and lady discuss everything except marriage plans. The courtship period is when the couple is certain they want to spend the rest of their lives together and start making plans towards marriage. Also, they make their intentions known to their parents. According to renowned counselors, there are no clear-cut timelines for the various stages but to prevent pre-marital sex, it is advised the guy and lady do not court for more than two years (I know people who disagree to this).

How to build a successful relationship

So how do you even start a successful relationship? One which will lead to courtship and then to marriage? Even the Bible establishes that it is not good for a man to be alone, so how do you identify the right person especially if you are a Christian. The first character to look out for in a prospective partner is someone who shares in your faith. The Bible categorically states that believers should not be unequally yoked (2 Corinthians 6:14). That peculiar feeling that you have especially at the beginning of the relationship, the butterflies in the stomach. Yes, that feeling – it fades away. It does after a few months of being with each other. How do you sustain the love if the person does not share the same faith as you?

As Christians, we base our love on 1 Corinthians 13 and not on that weird feeling at the pit of your stomach. People outside the faith have different opinions and beliefs on what love ought to be which is quite different from ours. Never compromise on that – do not allow the stomach flutter to direct you. Fall in love with someone who shares your faith and you will share your testimony with us 🙂

Watch out for other factors that account for successful relationships which lead to marriage.

The Marriage Series: Weddings

I would be a liar if I mentioned I wasn’t a big fan of marriage and wedding ceremonies. Wedding ceremonies are beautiful. I always get blown away by the colour combinations, the decor, the music, the bride’s dress, the bridal party and all that there is to the ceremony. Personally, I attend weddings to watch how the couple celebrate their love and my most favorite part of the ceremony is when the couple share with the guests how they met 🙂

Weddings are fun, no doubt about that. It is the period where family and friends gather to celebrate the union of a man and woman who have come to the conclusion they would want to spend their lives together. It is awesome but in the celebration of love, a lot of couples get carried away. They forget about the union and make the ceremony their main focus.

Interestingly, marriage is NOT the wedding ceremony. Neither is it the pomp and pageantry that accompanies the ceremony. According to renowned counselors, the wedding ceremony is the vows that are made by the couple in the presence of God, with the guests as the witnesses to the vow.

I am not saying spending money on the ceremony is not important. If you have the money and you can afford to feed the entire town during your wedding, why not? Just do it but if you are a young couple from a humble background with other dreams which requires money, then a smaller wedding is best option for you.

Couples who had small and very intimate marriage ceremonies provide the following tips:

1. Stick to your budget, no matter what”

2. Do not announce to the world you are getting married so you cut down on the numbers that attend.

3. Do not entertain too many opinions. They are likely to inflate your budget.

Keep these tips in mind when preparing for your wedding ceremony. There are other websites that provide additional information, tools and tips on how to reduce your budget when organizing a wedding ceremony. One of such sites is Pinterest .

Instead of breaking the bank to organize a huge wedding, why don’t you invest some time into some “hot” prayers for the union itself? A couple getting married in September are are doing one of the most amazing things ever. The couple with their bridal party meet once in a week to commit the ceremony and union into the hands of God.

God is the architect of marriage. In Genesis 2:18, after He had created Adam, He saw that Adam was alone therefore created a helper (Eve) for him. If you have plans to tying the knot, why don’t you start putting everything into the hands of God, the one who initiated the union?
